A lot has been said about the vaccine lately. The European Union has ordered 400 million doses of AZD1222 for this year, of which 11.7 million would go to the Netherlands. AstraZeneca should deliver the first 80 million doses by the end of March, 4.5 million of which to the Netherlands. To the anger of Brussels, the pharmaceutical company says it can now only deliver 31 million doses. That would be due to a faltering production at a factory in Wallonia.
Doubts have also been raised about the effectiveness of the drug. The German vaccine regulator says it is not clear whether the drug works in people over 65, while that is the most vulnerable group. Germany therefore recommends that the drug should only be administered to people under the age of 65.
In the Netherlands, the Health Council will soon issue an advisory report on the use of AZD1222. The government wants to use the drug to vaccinate people under 60 with medical complaints, as well as mental health workers and clients.
If the AstraZeneca vaccine is authorized, it will be the third drug on the market. Pfizer / BioNTech and Moderna vaccines have already been approved.
