Superstorm ‘Milton’ hits US, more than 3,000 flights canceled

Storm with tremendous power’Milton‘ hit Florida, United States (US). The storm caused more than 3,000 flight cancellations across the US.

Reported by CNN, flight schedule cancellations in the US today, Wednesday (9/10/2024), were the worst in almost two months. This refers to data from flight tracking site FlightAware.

FlightAware data shows that US airlines have canceled more than 1,800 flights today. Airlines in the US canceled nearly 1,000 flights scheduled for Thursday (10/10).

These flights were largely canceled due to the closure of airports along the path of the Milton storm. Orlando International Airport closed Wednesday morning around 08:00 local time.

Sarasota Bradenton, St. Petersburg-Clearwater and Southwest Florida airports have been closed since Tuesday evening (8/10). Meanwhile, Tampa International Airport was closed last Tuesday morning.

Hurricane Milton affected airlines with busy schedules in Florida. Spirit Airlines and JetBlue have canceled about 20% of their schedules for Wednesday. Meanwhile, Southwest Airlines has canceled some of its 10 flights on Wednesday.

Hurricane Milton is expected to become a category 5 hurricane. US President Joe Biden has ordered mass evacuations in areas expected to be affected by the storm.

“This is a matter of life and death, and that is not hyperbole,” Biden said when speaking from the White House on Tuesday (8/10) local time, as reported by AFP.
