(Seoul = Yonhap News) Reporter Lim Soon-hyeon = The stages of world-renowned ballet stars Park Se-eun (36) and Kim Ki-min (32) were different.

On the night of the 1st, Paris Opera Ballet Etoile (principal dancer) Se-eun Park and Mariinsky Ballet principal dancer Kim Ki-min appeared together on the stage at the Seoul Arts Center Opera House. It was the third day of the National Ballet’s performance of ‘La Bayadere’, which began on the 30th of last month.

This work is set in a Hindu temple in India and deals with the tragic love between the beautiful dancer Nikia and the young warrior Solor. Park Se-eun made a special appearance as ‘Nikia’ and Kim Ki-min appeared as ‘Solor’.

The two, who appeared on the same stage 15 years after the National Ballet’s performance of ‘Swan Lake’ in 2009, proved their worth by showing perfect chemistry.

At the beginning of the first act, Kim Ki-min appeared in grande jute (a movement in which the legs are widely spread back and forth while jumping), and the audience began to stir. The audience applauded Kim Ki-min’s light movements, as if he was flying in the sky without touching the ground, like the protagonist of a martial arts movie.

In the ‘Oath of Love’ pas de deux (two-person dance) that followed, we were able to meet the fantastic ensemble of Park Se-eun and Kim Ki-min. Although they only had three rehearsals before the performance, the two performed like veterans. Kim Ki-min holding the hand of Park Se-eun, who was doing attitude (balancing on one leg while lifting it with one leg bent) and arabesque (balancing on one leg, straightening the other leg and lifting it backwards). The promenade movement, circling around Park Se-eun, was elegant enough to thrill the audience.

Act 2, which deals with the engagement ceremony between ‘Solor’ and the kingdom’s princess ‘Gamjati’, was literally Kim Ki-min’s ‘one-man show’.

In the second act, which consisted of about 40 minutes of divertissement (dance inserted as a simple spectacle regardless of the plot of the story), Kim Ki-min captivated the audience with just one minute of solo dance. The audience was filled with shivers as they performed a grand jutte immediately after performing a high jump that felt like jumping in the air once more. The excited audience praised the performance with shouts and a three-minute standing ovation. The orchestra also stopped the music for a moment and paid tribute to Kim Ki-min’s amazing dance.

The third act, in which ‘Solor’ enters the world of ghosts and reunites with the murdered ‘Nikia’, was the stage of Park Se-eun and Kim Ki-min’s gala show.

The simple yet uncluttered two-person dance was like a demonstration worthy of appearing in a ballet textbook. The finale solo dance performed alternately by the two was so perfect that it overwhelmed the audience.

The weight of the two veterans, who held the center of the stage without losing concentration even in a chaotic atmosphere due to frequent mistakes by the main and supporting dancers, was also impressive.

In the first act, Ahn Soo-yeon, who appeared as ‘Gamjati’, fell while doing a pirouette (a movement in which one leg rotates around one leg), and pieces of broken props were scattered on the stage, and other incidents followed. Due to the unexpected situation, the cast seemed unable to concentrate on the performance until the third act.

The National Ballet’s ‘La Bayadère’ will be performed at the Seoul Arts Center Opera Theater until the 3rd. Park Se-eun and Kim Ki-min will appear on the stage one more time for the final time on the 3rd.
