The Tampa Bay Lightning was celebrated in the White House. Then the president stood for a blunder – which Victor Hedman could not hold back the laughter at.
It’s not exactly new that the reigning Stanley Cup champions get to visit the President of the White House, but for Tampa Bay Lightning it was actually the first time. The organization has won the Stanley Cup on three occasions, but the circumstances have meant that they were never allowed to participate in the ceremony.
First time in the House
The first time there was a lockout in the league, and most recently it was a pandemic, which meant that they were not allowed to carry out the tradition. But tonight it was finally time for the players, with star Victor Hedman as one of the front figures.
The Swedish superstar is classified as one of the very best defenders in the entire league, and has been instrumental in the team’s two Stanley Cup titles in recent years. Of course, he also participated last night, and was caught on camera when he could not hold back the laughter during President Joe Biden’s speech.
Strange miss
The president joked briskly with the team and the players during his speech – but the biggest laugh came after all after a real blunder. When he was going to talk about NHL commissioner Gary Bettman, he instead happened to call him Gary Batman, which led to a laughter party among the players.
– I would also like to thank Commissioner Gary “Batman” for being here. It is obvious that it is a pleasant time to be interested in sports in Tampa, said Biden.
After the fad, Biden was awarded a Tampa shirt with all players’ signed names on it, as well as a club, also signed. Tampa Bay is one of the favorites to win the Stanley Cup again this year, but then some promotion is required once the playoffs start.
