The Supersport T.50 from Gordon Murray Automotive is a fascinating car. And also expensive and rare. However, even this does not save him from demanding tests.
Even exotic supersports must meet homologation standards, related to safety, for example. It is for this reason that they undergo testing, which can be quite drastic, as evidenced by footage recently shown off by Gordon Murray Automotive.
On them we can see the prototype of the T.50 model with the designation XP1 during tests related to the calibration of the airbag function. The car was tested at the ATP Papenburg complex in the German city of Papenburg. The aim of these tests is to ensure that the airbags only work in situations where they are supposed to and do not “fire” for example for no reason.
The tests therefore mainly involved driving over several types of bumps at higher speeds. The T.50 raced over unpleasant pavement, hit potholes or passed obstacles reminiscent of a railway crossing.
The Supersport even flew by when driving up a 250 millimeter high ramp at a speed of 70 km/h. It is downright painful to watch the test, during which the test driver Dario Franchitti intentionally runs around the obstacle simulating the curb.
But the same can also be said about imitating a collision with a wild pig or driving into a pile of gravel at a speed of 30 km/h. After all, see for yourself.
The XP1 prototype, which survived the tests without major damage, will be retired after a year of testing and then used for training service technicians. It will then be displayed as a museum piece.
Recall that the T.50 is powered by a naturally aspirated 3.9-liter twelve-cylinder, which boasts a red field starting at 12,100 rpm. It is also connected to a manual transmission. Power reaches 488 kW, torque 467 Nm. At the same time, the car weighs only 986 kg.
The automaker intends to build 100 examples, the price starts at some 65 million crowns.
