One of them, taken on February 19, shows the complete launch cycle of the “Zirkon”, showing the launch of the missile from the deck of the frigate “Admiral Gorshkov”.

An important nuance lies in the fact that using a universal launcher, the developers were limited in terms of the size of the rocket. In addition, a universal container is used for its launch, similar to the one used to launch Onyx anti-ship missiles, which are launched both from ships and from Bastion coastal complexes.
–
At the same time, “Onyx” has a range of up to 300 km and an altitude speed of up to Mach 2.6 (0.88 km/s). This means that with the same parameters, the new “Zirkon” missile has three times the range and speed.
–
Can “Zirkon” be considered a supersonic cruise missile?
–
Three times the speed and range does not mean three times more complex development, but the need to learn completely new technologies related to supersonic itself.
–
The main problem is the creation of a supersonic jet engine, as well as special alloys that can withstand very high temperatures.
–
The most important thing is the control system, because supersonic flight means flying in a cloud of hot gas – plasma, through which radio waves cannot penetrate. In other words, in such a flight, any missile control system is powerless, writes UNIAN.
–
Therefore, there are two versions of how “Zirkon” works. The first – the missile is set to coordinates, and then only the inertial system works. It guides the missile to the target area with a large margin of error, but the inaccuracy is compensated by the power of the nuclear warhead.
