Supernova 2024: Song Submissions Begin for Latvian Television’s Eurovision Contest

On Tuesday, September 12, song submissions for Latvian Television’s (LTV) author and song performer competition “Supernova” began, LTV informs.

“At the beginning of 2024, the viewers in Supernova will again have the opportunity to decide which musician or group to entrust with the honor and responsible task of representing Latvia in the international Eurovision Song Contest, which will be held in May in Malmö, Sweden. More than 237 million viewers sympathized with this year’s Eurovision! Latvian musicians the competition is a great opportunity to dare to perform on the biggest and most important music stage in Europe, to tell the world your story and to indulge in a creative adventure,” says Agnese Štrause-Kubliņa, editorial director of LTV’s children, youth and entertainment programs.

Soloists, duos and groups with no more than six members are invited to apply for “Supernova”. The song submitted to the competition must not have been published, played or performed at public events before September 1, 2023. Foreign citizens have the opportunity to participate in the competition only as lyricists, music authors or phonogram producers.

Until November 30 at 11:59 p.m., songs and performers for “Supernova” can be requested on the public media portal LSM.lv where the rules of the competition are also published.

The songs for the next round of “Supernovas”, which will be broadcast live on television, will be chosen by a jury, which will include representatives of the Latvian music industry, events and television, as well as foreign professionals. LTV will reveal the names of the jury representatives after the international Eurovision Song Contest in May.

When choosing the songs submitted to “Supernova”, the jury will evaluate their originality, arrangement, message and compliance with modern market trends, while when deciding on the participation of the performers in the competition, the musicians’ vocal abilities, previous achievements in the music industry and potential for success in the future will be essential.

As early as January 2024, every fan of the contest will have the opportunity to get to know the members of “Supernova” chosen by the jury, while in vivid television shows in February of next year, the audience will be able to evaluate the performances and decide together with the jury in the final, which participant will be awarded a ticket to Eurovision.

In 2023, the group “Sudden Lights” won the competition “Supernova” and the opportunity to participate in Eurovision in Great Britain with the song “Aija”. The 67th international Eurovision Song Contest was won by the Swedish representative Lorena with the song “Tattoo”, so the 2024 contest will be held in the Swedish city of Malmö.
