Supernormales has achieved remarkable success from both the public and critics since its premiere. The production was a finalist in the most recent edition of the MAX Awards in two of the main categories (Best Theatrical Authorship and Best Stage Direction), finally winning the apple in the second, which was collected by Iñaki Rikarte.
The work, written by Esther F. Carrodeguas, resident author of the CDN during the 2020-21 season, and directed by Iñaki Rikarte, addresses the issue of sexuality of people with disabilities and offers it to us in the form of a black comedy, with many dose of criticism and humor, in an attempt to confront the public with its own prejudices regarding this group.
Infantilization, paternalism, the homogenization of their needs, the deprivation of an experience of their own and natural sexuality, or violence of all kinds – economic, structural, gender, sexual… – that is exercised against them, are some of the the aspects that the piece puts on the table, with “an overwhelming, very direct text, which breaks taboos with cannon shots and leaves no puppet with a head”, as Iñaki Rikarte declares.
The director of the piece defines it as “a contradictory show” from many points of view. “Starting because it is signed by an author and a director without (visible) disabilities, very aware that giving a voice is, inevitably, supplanting that voice,” the City Council reports in a statement.
Sexuality, context magnifying glass Esther F. Carrodeguas is an actress, director, performer and writer. The Galician creator was one of those selected to participate in the first edition of the Dramatic Residencies launched by the CDN in the 2020-21 season. It was in this framework where she found the appropriate context to address a topic that she had been thinking about for some time, after having previously worked with people with functional diversity. “I wanted to work specifically on the violence exerted on the group, and to do so I decided to place the work in the context of their sexuality”, a context that, according to the author, acts as a magnifying glass to amplify the vision of paternalism and prejudices with those you encounter in your daily life.
The result is a comic, biting, uncomfortable piece that “teaches us things from other angles that broaden our perspective and force us to look under the rug,” according to Carrodeguas.
As the director adds, “Supernormales is about forcing us to look where we don’t want to. It’s about opening our eyes to the problem. Because there is a problem: the sexual desire of people with functional diversity exists. They need, like everyone else, to love and to be loved. The extraordinary thing, the contradictory thing, is that this is uncomfortable for us.
On stage, a cast of ten actors – Emilio Gavira, José Manuel Blanco, Gemma Martínez, Natalia Huarte, Jorge Kent, Mónica Lamberti, Anna Marchessi, Marcos Mayo, Inma Nieto and Elvira Cuadrupani – make up a mosaic of situations that will lead us from from hilarity to the most embarrassing reflection, passing through grotesqueness and emotion.
“Supernormals is an uncomfortable show. And also fun. And very exciting.
