What are supermoons?

Clara explained, a supermoon is a phenomenon when the full moon is at its closest distance to Earth.

Supermoon occurs because the path of the Moon around the Earth is not perfectly round, but instead has a slightly elliptical or oval shape.

“A full moon occurs when the Moon is directly opposite the Sun, Earth between them,” he explains.

When this phenomenon occurs, the moon will appear larger, closer, and brighter than usual.

This condition causes the entire surface of the moon facing the Earth to reflect sunlight.

Supermoon impact

Clara said that the supermoon would not have any harmful effects on Earth.

Nevertheless, it is possible that there will be changes in the tides during the supermoon.

“The impact may only be on the height of the tide. I don’t know how big the increase will be, but maybe not too significant,” he explained, quoted from Kompas.com (3/7/2023).

At these times, the Moon and Sun will form a line with Earth. So that the ebb and flow effects will complement each other.

In addition, during a supermoon the gravitational effects of the Sun and Moon will also combine.

The Sun’s gravitational effect on Earth, as in affecting the tides, is only about half that of the Moon.

When the Moon is closest to Earth, its gravitational pull is at its highest and causes the perigean tides to be higher than normal.

“No need to use tools to see it,” he said.

Meanwhile, regarding the time, Clara said there was no significant peak time to watch the supermoon.

“All night it won’t make a difference. As long as the weather supports all night, the moon will appear bright,” he said.
