Supermoon brings flood risk to South Florida | Your City Univision 23 Miami Weather

During this weekend until the night of Monday, May 16, South Florida is at risk of coastal flooding due to higher than normal tides.

South Florida will experience tides of more than 2 1/2 feet, which may cause some flooding in low-lying coastal areas of Miami-Dade and Broward.

Here are the high tide times for Biscayne Bay, according to tidesandcurrents.noaa.gov:

  • Saturday May 14, 8:49 p.m.
  • Sunday, May 15, 8:55 a.m. and 9:39 p.m.
  • Monday, May 16, 9:43 a.m. and 10:30 p.m.

This May 16 we will have a full supermoon

The event coincides with a total eclipse and the moon will appear red.

A supermoon occurs when the full or new moon comes very close to the earth. This closeness is called perigee. The phases of the moon, and its distance from the earth affect the tides.

When the earth and the moon are very close, higher tides occur, this happens due to the attractive force of the moon on the planet earth.

A sunny, hot Saturday awaits Miami with isolated rains arriving in the afternoon
