Supermodel Linda Evangelista revealed that she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2018 and underwent a double mastectomy. The 58-year-old Canadian shared the news in an interview with the Wall Street Journal, adding that she discovered another lump in her breast last year.
Evangelista says her prognosis is “good, but not great,” calling herself “one foot in the grave.” She explained that she had chemotherapy and radiotherapy for her latest tumor. “Once he comes back, there’s a chance. I know I’ve got one foot in the grave, but I’m in a festive mood,” she said.
The model revealed that her cancer was first discovered during her annual mammogram. “Due to other health factors, without hesitation, I wanted to put it all behind me and not deal with it. I decided to have a bilateral mastectomy,” she shares.
“I thought I was ready for life. Breast cancer won’t kill me,” says Evangelista. Last July, she discovered a lump in her breast that turned out to be pectoral cancer. She tells her doctor to “dig a hole in her chest” if he has to.
“I don’t want it to look pretty. I want you to dig. I want to see a hole in my chest when you’re done. You understand? I’m not going to die from this,” Evangelista recalled of the scary moment.
The fashion icon also says that “only a handful of people knew” about her diagnosis. “I told myself that one day I would share this, but not while I was going through the disease.”
In January of this year, her colleague, Supermodel Tatiana Patits died at the age of 56 from metastatic breast cancer.
Last year, Linda Evangelista appeared on the cover of Vogue for the first time since declaring herself “disfigured” by a botched cosmetic procedure.
