In recent weeks, the insecurity in New York in supermarkets had a high increase and the owners of the shops chose to place anti-theft devices even on ice cream.

This could be seen in the images that the American medium New York Post shared. In them you can see how in the business called Fairway, on the Upper West Side, the US$6 ice creams have screwed plastic lids that can only be removed with a device that has the cash register.

And that is not all. In other supermarkets, they also placed chains locked with padlocks on the refrigerators.

These measures, as reported by the merchants on the posters pasted on the walls, have an explanation: “To help keep the cost as low as possible, a protective lock was placed on some ice cream units,” it reads.

“A store clerk will remove this lock at checkout. We apologize for any inconvenience,” they added.

In addition, on the other hand, according to the American media, the customers of the store pointed out: “This is the era in which we live now, unfortunately. This is the New York we know.”

With regard to supermarkets that place chains with padlocks, an employee stressed that they are to protect frozen products. “People used to come in with garbage bags and fill the garbage bags with ice cream. They empty our freezers,” he maintained.

As merchants complain about ice cream thieves, business robberies skyrocketed with more than 13,000 reports in the first quarter of 2023, according to the most recent data from the New York police.
