Supermarkets Cut Milk Prices: Concerns Raised by IFA
The Irish Farmers Association (IFA) has expressed concern as multiple supermarkets slash the price of milk. Aldi and Lidl are among the retailers reducing the cost of two-litre cartons of milk by up to 10c, prompting a consumer group to call for others to follow suit. This marks the first time in over a decade that large Irish supermarkets have cut milk prices, highlighting the impact of living costs on consumers.
In response to the news, the IFA has called on retailers to ensure that farmers are not forced to subsidise the cost of milk production. The organisation warns that low prices could damage Ireland’s dairy industry and impact on the wellbeing of farmers.
Despite the concerns, the move has been applauded by consumers enjoying the savings. Lidl’s decision to cut prices has been met with particular enthusiasm, as the store sells around 7 million litres of milk per month. Other retailers will need to follow suit, however, if they hope to compete and retain customers.
