Supermarket in Brazil hides body behind umbrellas and keeps shop open | NOW

A Brazilian supermarket has hidden the body of a man who died in the store behind umbrellas and boxes, but failed to close the doors. Pictures show that some customers did their shopping unsuspectingly.

The man, a sales manager, died of a heart attack on the floor of the Carrefour store last Friday. After criticism on social media, the incident has only now become known.

Instead of staff immediately closing the store, it was decided to keep shoppers away from the body. Photos show that cardboard boxes were positioned so that no one could come near the man. The view of the body was blocked by parasols.

The Carrefour branch in Recife, a town in the east of the country, has said in a statement that it regrets the way the incident was handled. The supermarket calls it “inappropriate that the doors are not closed immediately in anticipation of the funeral directors”.

In the same statement, Carrefour also says sorry to the next of kin. The husband’s widow has told Brazilian media that the incident has angered her.
