The transition to more animal welfare will happen gradually, and more slowly than in the Netherlands. “Colruyt wants to roll out the animal welfare criteria together with the suppliers, step by step,” says the supermarket chain in a press release. “It is not so easy for the suppliers to adapt the production methods to the new criteria. Sometimes expensive investments are necessary, for example in the structure of the chicken coops.”
