Superintendency refutes Abinader and former director on electricity rate hike

SANTO DOMINGO.- The electricity rate applied to users of the electric service has remained unchanged since June 2011, the Superintendency of Electricity (SIE) reported on Thursday.

The agency refuted, without mentioning them, recent pronouncements of the PRM presidential candidate, Luis Abinader, and the former director of Proconsumidor, Altagracia Paulino, in the sense that there have been “abusive” increases in the bill that distributors charge to Dominicans.

In a statement, the SIE explains that a resolution issued in 2011 frozen those rates.

The SIE document is as follows:

“Resolution SIE-017-2020-TF, which establishes the rates for the April-June 2020 quarter, ratifies the same prices. The Superintendency also communicates that Resolution SIE-017-2020-TF establishes for residential customers with BTS-1 Rate (Simple Low Voltage 1) that the
Rates are as follows:

– First 200 kWh at RD $ 4.44;
– From 201 and 300 kWh to RD $ 6.97;
– From 301 and 700 kWh at RD $ 10.86; and
– Greater than 700 kWh all kilowatts at RD $ 11.10.

Regarding the other tariff categories (BTD, BTH, MTD-1, MTD-2 and MTH) that cover residential customers with demand for power equal to or greater than 10 kW, small and large businesses, industries, etc. … the rates have remained the same.

The Superintendency of Electricity (SIE) recalls that the distributors are supplying 24 hours of electrical energy and that consumption has increased due to the fact that we are longer at home due to the Covid-19 pandemic, so we urge customers to save and put electricity to good use in order to lower consumption ”.
