Recently, increased attention of the technology world has been paid to artificial intelligence (AI) solutions, which many large companies are actively integrating into their products and services. Well, this event will expand to the scale of entire countries. Britain has announced that it will invest 900 million pounds in the creation of a state-of-the-art supercomputer, which will run its AI model “BritGPT” and explore wider applications of the technology.
The British Treasury has revealed that it plans to use this money to build an exascale computer that would be extremely powerful. Such a computer can perform more than one billion simple calculations per second. Currently, there is only one exascale computer in the entire world, located in the United States.
Britain plans to use its exascale computer to train complex AI models. However, such a device has wide applications in other areas as well, such as science, industry, defence, climate forecast modeling, etc. Consequently, it would also allow researchers to better understand climate change, promote the discovery of new drugs and maximize Britain’s potential and competitiveness in the field of AI.
Also, part of the allocated £900 million will go towards the creation of a new artificial intelligence research facility. To strengthen Britain’s AI capabilities, the Treasury has also announced that it will award £1 million annually for the next ten years to the most ground-breaking AI research. In parallel, the British government will invest £2.5 billion in the development of quantum technology over the next decade.
