The northern US states of Minnesota, North Dakota and Montana are taking measures to prevent an invasion of so-called ‘super pigs’ from Canada. There, crosses have arisen between wild boars from Europe, which have good survival skills, and large local boars.
Ryan Brook, professor at Canada’s University of Saskatchewan, calls it an “ecological drama”. He calls the ‘super pigs’ “one of the most invasive species in the world”.
Wild boars not only have the survival instinct of the European species, but also the reproductive drive and size of Canadian boars. This has made it virtually impossible to keep the boar population in check.
“Even if you kill 65 percent of the population every year, the species will continue to grow,” Brook says AP News. He and other scientists estimate that there are now at least 62,000 of these ‘super pigs’ living in the wild.
Some animals have been spotted 17 miles from the Canadian border with the state of Minnesota. The US Department of Agriculture has increased the number of drone surveillance flights and inspections along the border with Canada.
Because of their size and appetite, the ‘super pigs’ can cause a lot of damage. Annually, wild boars in the United States cause almost 2.3 billion euros in damage to crops.
