Super Mario Bros. Wonder is one of the most fun games of the year, regardless of whether you play alone or with three others. Wonder may ‘only’ take fifteen hours to complete, but it continuously manages to reinvent itself. Sometimes it does this with new temporary upgrades or new game worlds, but just as often this game surprises with the design of the colorful levels. When you find one of the Wonder Flowers in a level, you never know what awaits you next. It’s great that Super Mario. Bros Wonder strings together so many different game mechanics so smoothly. This Mario game also jumps off the screen, with all its colorful environments and varied themes. Super Mario Bros. Wonder is without a doubt the most creative two-dimensional addition to the series and an absolute must-have for Nintendo Switch owners.
That Super Mario Bros. Wonder makes a big impression, which is not surprising in itself. Mario games rarely disappoint and Super Mario Wonder already looked incredibly entertaining in previous images from Nintendo. Still, some Switch owners will be somewhat relieved and surprised that Wonder is a truly complete and worthy Mario game. Perhaps that’s mainly because the last two-dimensional Mario game, New Super Mario Bros. 2, which disappointed. It was above all a safe sequel to the first part. After that, it was quiet for a long time about two-dimensional Mario games, but with Super Mario Bros. Wonder now changes that.
The moment of revelation is also striking, because Super Mario Bros. Wonder was revealed relatively late by Nintendo. It is difficult to guess why. 2023 is filled to the brim with good titles, not to mention the many surprises. As a result, many games snowball or disappear from the public wake after a few days. It seems illogical to announce a game, even a Mario game, only a few months before release in this overcrowded gaming year. Yet that is exactly what Nintendo has done. The game was only revealed at the end of June.
In addition, there are the rumors about ‘a new Switch’, which seem to become more concrete every week. It probably won’t be long before Nintendo unveils its new console to the general public. On paper, the phase-out of the current Nintendo Switch should therefore be in full swing, which is usually bad news for the game offering. Still, the Nintendo Switch seems to be going for a banging end. Princess Peach: Showtime!, Super Mario RPG, WarioWare: Move It! and Mario vs. Donkey Kong are all still coming. However, the absolute standard bearer of this exodus is Super Mario Bros. Miracle.
Where New Super Mario Bros. 2 played it safe, Wonder keeps the accelerator pressed continuously. Super Mario Bros. Wonder alternates so many varied game mechanics that the beautiful levels are almost bursting at the seams with creativity and secrets. Wonder can easily compete with its large three-dimensional brothers in ingenuity, including the acclaimed Mario Galaxy and Odyssey. Moreover, this game is just as fun to play alone as it is with three other players on the couch. Super Mario Bros. Wonder a dessert? Nothing is less true. Wonder is more of a modern classic.
