Washington (AP) – The soundtrack of “Super Mario Bros.” is the first video game music to be included in the official United States Music Registry. The music of the game, which was released in the 1980s, is one of 25 sound recordings, songs and albums selected for the music register this year, said the US National Library of Congress. This should “preserve history” and “reflect the complex culture of our country,” said director Carla Hayden.
“To have preserved this music alongside so many other classic songs is such a great honor,” said Koji Kondo, now 61, from Japan, who wrote the music for “Super Mario Bros.” wrote. “It’s a little hard to believe.” In addition to the soundtrack, the new recordings also include the songs “Like a Virgin” by Madonna, “All I Want for Christmas Is You” by Mariah Carey, “All Hail the Queen” and “Gasolina” by Daddy Yankee.
Every year, recordings that are at least ten years old and “culturally, historically or aesthetically important” are included in the music register, which was founded in 2000.
