Originally released in 1983, Super Mario Bros. has become a real museum piece, and an object that collectors are snatching up all over the world. A title so popular that it has just broken the record for the most expensive game ever sold at auction.
A new sealed cartridge, dating from 1985, was sold for $ 114,000 at a public sale organized by Heritage Auctions in Dallas, Texas. The buyers clashed for a long time, since it took 29 auctions for the object to be auctioned to a person, who also wished to remain anonymous. This sum makes it possible to establish a new record, the previous one being, as recalled Eurogamer, $ 100,150 in 2019, for another copy of Super Mario Bros. The price obviously seems high, but Heritage Auction explains that this is the highest rated copy (9.4 / 10) ever offered for sale.
It was part of one of the game’s short production runs packed in boxes with a cardboard label under the plastic, an indication that it was part of one of the first variants produced after Nintendo started using shrink wrap to seal games rather than stickers.
