Mario’s 35th anniversary is celebrated with some of its best games ever, but the nostalgia of Super Mario 3D All-Stars comes with a price tag.
–
Mario is celebrating its 35th anniversary this year and to celebrate Nintendo has released Super Mario 3D All-Stars for Switch. The game collects three popular 3D games starring Mario. These are Super Mario 64 (1997), Super Mario Sunshine (2002) and Super Mario Galaxy (2007). If you grew up with Mario, you have undoubtedly played one or more of these titles, which appeared on Nintendo 64, GameCube and the original Wii. Prepare yourself immediately for a good dose of nostalgia.
Optimized for Switch
All games have been given a higher resolution for their switch to the Switch and the frame rates have also been pushed up for a playing experience that is smoother than ever, but also recognizable from start to finish. Unfortunately, it will stop there and Nintendo has not taken the extra time to provide a fully-fledged remaster of these games, which makes Super Mario 3D All-Stars less accessible to new players. By comparison, we think of the Spyro Reignited trilogy that provided a full graphics upgrade and could appeal to a completely new generation of gamers.
Limited Availability
Obviously that would have been a much bigger project for Nintendo and there’s nothing wrong with re-releases per se, but the price tag just doesn’t add up. Fans of the first hour will probably be willing to pay 60 euros to relive their childhood, but if you look beyond the nostalgic aspect, you don’t get more than three quick ports with some minor tweaks to the controller set-up. biggest changes. Oh, and the soundtracks from all three games. That’s a nice addition, but we would much rather have had Super Mario Galaxy 2.
For a release like this we would normally wait a while on other platforms and then pick up the bundle at half price for the best value for money, but historically you shouldn’t expect many discounts from Nintendo. Skipping the game for a while to buy it later is unfortunately also not an option, because Super Mario 3D All-Stars is both physical and digital but for sale until March 31, 2021. fans to get the game right now. A possible explanation for this could be that Nintendo wants to bring the games to Nintendo Switch Online in the future along with other Nintendo 64 and GameCube games and quickly wants to score with some titles that are already ready for that.
Final verdict Super Mario 3D All-Stars
However, regardless of the marketing aspect, we have to admit that Super Mario 3D All-Stars is just a really fun, nostalgic experience. Super Mario 64 remains fun because of its simplicity and shows the challenges Nintendo faced to produce this first Mario game in 3D. Sunshine is still a unique game and cleaning an entire island with a talking pressure washer on your back is still as much fun as it was almost 20 years ago and Galaxy provides a cool challenge thanks to the motion controls that were so important on the Wii. Those who eventually take the plunge and purchase the game will enjoy hours of fun with the three titles, because the gaming experience has remained completely the same.
