Super League Update: Title Contenders Yet to Secure Victories in Snail Race for the Top Spot

Super League

The title contenders remain without victories: snail race at the top of the Super League

The Young Boys, Servette and Lugano are in a snail race. Meanwhile, the line fight is coming to a head – and GC continues to lose. The overview.

YB, Servette and Lugano remain winless

Servette is very frustrated. They had the opportunity to push YB off the top of the table twice in the English week. They don’t take advantage of the opportunity twice. And the championship candidate from Geneva also loses the third game of the week.

Servette had a lot of bad luck in the 0-1 loss against FC Zurich. The Genevans dominate, but don’t score the goals. And the goal conceded by FCZ player Amadou Dante in stoppage time in the first half would have to be annulled. Antonio Marchesano pulls Keigo Tsunemoto back in the penalty area. Later, Servette goalie Joël Mall gets annoyed and says that the VAR should have intervened.

His coach René Weiler mentioned about the third defeat in a week that he had never talked about winning the title. “They kept asking me about it, which annoyed me. Now you understand it,” he says in “Blick”.

But Servette remains a candidate for masters because the competition is not irresistible. The Young Boys are also behind in St. Gallen for a while, even 0-2. But the reigning champion shows morale. Late on, YB equalized the game after goals from Silvere Ganvoula and Joel Mvuka and secured a 2-2 draw in the difficult away game in Eastern Switzerland. The Young Boys now lead the table five points ahead of Servette.

The third championship candidate Lugano failed to overtake Servette. After six wins in a row, the Ticino team is joining the snail race at the top of the table. Although Lugano leads twice in Winterthur, the home team always comes back.

Line fighting becomes a long-distance duel between rivals

There are only two rounds left before the league is divided into the Champions Group and the Relegation Group. With Zurich, Winterthur, St. Gallen and Lucerne, four teams are fighting for three places in the top 6. Based on the results this weekend, there are many signs of a long-distance battle between the two rivals Lucerne and St. Gallen. While Winterthur drew against Lugano and Zurich won in Geneva, St. Gallen and Lucerne, ranked behind, did not get beyond a draw.

This means they miss putting pressure on the Zurich teams. The 0-0 draw at home against Lausanne-Sport is particularly disappointing for the FCL, as the central Swiss team urgently needed a win. St. Gallen is in sixth place, one point ahead of Lucerne. The Eastern Swiss still play at home against Yverdon and away at FCZ, Lucerne has to play in Bern and at home against Basel.

GC shows morale – but still continues to lose

Three games, three defeats: the English week turns into a disaster for the Grasshoppers. In the important six-point game against opponent Yverdon, GC wanted to take a step to escape the barrage place. But that doesn’t work.

GC in Yverdon shows a significantly improved fighting face. But initially a lot of things go against GC. Kevin Carlos gave Yverdon the lead in the ninth minute with a Sunday shot. A little later, Dirk Abels makes a serious bad pass and Carlos escapes again. Joshua Laws comes too late, brings him down – and sees the red card. «This team is alive. Otherwise we would fall apart after this start and lose the game 0:4 or 0:5,” said GC coach Bruno Berner later. But the record champions’ team made the game exciting thanks to two goals from Pascal Schürpf. In the end, the Vaudois won 3-2.

The situation is becoming increasingly difficult for GC in the fight against relegation. In the last eleven games, GC has only won one. “We now have seven finals by the end of the season,” says Schürpf on “Blue”. He sees the team as significantly improved than last time, but says: “It’s still far from enough.”
