The Big 4 have found a new field of confrontation in the league and this is the offside lines when VAR is used to determine if a goal is valid or invalid. It all started in the 2nd matchday of Super League 1, specifically in Olympiakos’ game against Athens Kallithea.
The “red and white” prevailed 2-1 with a goal by Roman Yaremchuk, which he scored after a VAR signal. Initially, the Ukrainian’s goal was canceled as offside by the match referee Angelos Evangelou after a suggestion from the assistant who raised the flag. However, following the intervention of VAR Petros Tsagarakis, the goal counted, as according to the lines, El Kaabi, who was involved in the phase, was covered by an Athens Kallithea defender after the unstable save by goalkeeper Barragan. Immediately there were voices that, in a free translation, implied that the offside lines… were twisted to count the goal that gave the victory to Olympiakos. The EPO’s reaction was also immediate. The president of Makis Gagatsis met with the Deputy Minister of Sports Yannis Vroutsis, to whom he raised the necessity of implementing the “semi-automatic offside”, in addition to the current VAR system, in the SL1 championship. He proposed that the cost of the additional contract, which should be concluded by the football bodies with the provider, be paid with a corresponding deduction from the annual funding of the PAEs, through the taxation of the winnings of the players of games of chance, next January for 2025 and C Vroutsis as the responsible minister agreed.
To the board of the league
The issue was also discussed midweek at the Super League’s Board of Directors and as announced “it was unanimously decided to immediately carry out a detailed investigation into the economic and technical data and other issues related to the VAR technology, after the expiration of the current contract between the Greek State and the EU. P.O. (season 2025-26 and beyond), as well as for the implementation of additional functions (Goal-line technology and Semiautomated offside)”. The semi-automatic offside goes for the next season, although the Big 4 wish (in words) to have it work as soon as possible so that there are no new gray areas in refereeing decisions. However, the small and medium-sized companies are reacting, not accepting to pay 80,000 euros a year to overcome another point that is expected to cause confrontations and, by extension, toxicity.
In her placement on the council, Ms. president of the Cooperative Katia Koxenoglou said that “5-7 months of preparation are needed for the implementation of the semi-automatic offside. Not all the stadiums are modern, like AEK, PAOK or Olympiakos, for the Goal-line technology and Semi-automated offside applications to work”. However, the preparation was done by the previous management of the league and it is obvious that some teams are “putting the brakes” on the “enhancement” of VAR operation in the current season.
What does it offer?
The semi-automatic offside system provides faster and more consistent placement of the virtual offside line, based on visual player tracking, and produces high-quality broadcast graphics. This is edge detection technology that uses around a dozen additional cameras, placed throughout the stadium, to provide the exact position of players on the pitch, giving referees accurate information in seconds. The system generates 29 data points per player, tracking different body parts.
The term “semi-automatic” was chosen by FIFA to indicate that the match referees will have the final say, with a dedicated VAR assistant to watch for offside.
The technology was used for the first time at the 2022 World Cup.
