A women’s version of the new Super League could have “devastating consequences for women’s football”, according to the European Football Association Uefa.
Twelve big clubs plan to break out of the Champions League to form their own super league for men. When the league starts, the plans are to launch a similar project for the ladies.
Uefa is worried about the development.
The Women’s Champions League is being redesigned for next season and a group game for 16 teams is introduced. In addition, they also want to increase the exposure by scheduling match days so they do not clash with the men’s big matches in Europe.
“The news comes without any consultation and at a time when the women’s Champions League is undergoing a change,” UEFA’s women’s manager Nadine Kessler wrote in a statement on Twitter.
Kessler says the idea of a “closed shop” deprives clubs of the opportunity to reach the highest level and destroys the growing women’s football.
“Such a development would be devastating for the national leagues that have made enormous efforts to professionalize women’s football.”
