Super League 2: Centers with names as heavy as history – Teams that have left their mark on football – 2024-09-19 09:32:28

The Super League 2 championship for the 2024-25 season starts next weekend (21-22/9) and is expected with even greater interest than last year as this year no less than eleven teams out of the 20 in total that once ranked in A National but also the Super League 1!

The 20 teams, divided into two groups that after the regular season will have promotion playoffs and playoffs to stay in the division, are expected to play many derbies every Sunday, as historic teams with heavy jerseys promise big thrills in the toughest Greek league.

The goal is the big comeback

The 1st group consists of Diagoras Rhodes, Ethnikos Neos Keramidu, Heraklis, Kavala, Kampaniakos, Larisa, Makedonikos, Niki Volou, PAOK II and PAS Ioannina. A group-fire, full of historical jerseys. From the champion of Greece (1988) and cup winner (1985, 2007) Larisa to the cup winner (1976) Iraklis, which returns after many torturous years and adventures with relegations to the minor categories, aiming to make a big return to the halls of Greek football. With them are “Ajax of Epirus” PAS Ioannina, who were relegated last year from SL1, Kavala who were once in the top division, as well as Diagoras Rodou, Niki Volou and Makedonikos who have played in the First National League.

Campaniakos, who once held “funerals” in the Cup for many greats of our football, returned to the category after many years. Also participating are PAOK B’ and the neophyte Ethnikos Neos Keramido.

The 2nd group of the category includes: AEK B, Aegaleo, Asteras Tripoli B, Ilioupoli, Kalamata, Kifisia, Panargeiakos, Panachaiki, Panionios, Chania. First of all, let’s say that the B’ teams of the “eternal” Olympiakos and Panathinaikos are absent, as they were relegated and disbanded, despite the fact that two years ago PAE insisted on the creation of the B’ teams with participation in the category. On the contrary, AEK II remained and Asteras Tripoli II participated for the first time. As in the 1st group, here too we have many historical groups. First of all is Panionios with the two Greek Cups and the many European participations. The “historian” after the financial adventures returned to the professional categories and aspires to climb to the big category again. Four years in the 3rd national team was a long time for the “blue-reds”, who will play again in the 2nd national team after 27 years, as their last appearance there was in the 1996-97 season.

Panionios has produced top scorers in Greek football (Black, Anastopoulos, Sarawak), while also the leader of the national team Tasos Bakasetas he played great matches in the blue and red shirt before he was transferred to AEK.

Along with him are Kifisia, who were relegated last year despite their sometimes impressive appearances, but also old heavyweights of the First National, such as Panachaiki, Aegaleo and Kalamata. Close by are Chania, Ilioupoli and Panargeiakos, for whom 26 years passed before he appeared again in the professional categories.

From living rooms to threshing floors

However, apart from the resounding presence both in the second league and in the 3rd National League, it is worth pointing out that the relegation of Ionian Nice to the local championships of Piraeus due to financial problems has caused disappointment, as happened last year with Apollon Athens who are now competing in the local Athens, but also with Progressive, Veria, Panileiakos and other teams with tenure in the major categories.

Heavy jerseys also in the 3rd National Team

Teams with a huge history are also found in the 3rd National, which will be held with 71 teams divided into four groups. Among them we find in the 1st group Apollos Kalamarias and Panthrakikos, who even play against each other in the premiere. In the 2nd group, three teams with glorious days in the First National, Pierikos (finalist of the Cup at one time), Trikala and Olympiakos Volos with a term in Super League 1 as well as a European presence. In the 3rd group, Corinth and Rhodes participate with a rich tenure in the top division, while in the 4th group is the historical National Piraeus. The four groups in detail:

1st group: Alexandroupoli, Apollon Kryas Vrysis, Panthrakikos, Apollon Kalamaria, Heraklis Ammoudias, Nestos Chrysoupolis, PAOK Kristoni, Apollon Paralimniou, Aris Avatou, Haniotis, Moudania, AE Evosmou, PAOP Amisos, Kilkisiakos, Aris Pigon, Thermaikos, Poseidonas Michanionas, Orestes Orestiadas.
