Super Knock Phenomenon in Turbo Direct Injection Petrol Cars and Appropriate Oil Specifications

TRIBUNNEWS.COM, JAKARTA – Some owners of vehicles with machines that have technology Turbo Gasoline Direct Injection (TGDI) complain about the problem Low Speed Pre-Ignition (LSPI) on the vehicle.

LSPI is a phenomenon on engines with TGDI technology where the fuel burns first before the spark plugs spark.

The LSPI phenomenon causes the engine to produce enormous power and results in a “super knock”.

If this happens repeatedly will damage the cylinder wall, piston, piston ring, connecting rod. This symptom is triggered by a mixture of oil and fuel that burns itself (pre-ignition) in the combustion chamber.

“This LSPI occurs when the engine is operating at low RPM and high load (car runs slowly, suddenly speeds up),” explained Adi Tjahjono, Managing Director of Gulf Oil Indonesia.

Adi explained that the phenomenon of the occurrence of LSPI cannot be predicted and cannot be prevented by adjusting the ignition timing of the spark plugs or using higher octane fuel.

“This LSPI can be improved by using the appropriate additive lubricant technology,” he said.

Adi stated, to answer the super knock complaint on the direct injection turbocharger engine earlier, his party has released the latest Gulf Ultrasynth GDI (Gasoline Direct Injection) lubricant.

According to him, this lubricant is very good for use in gasoline engines with previous technologies such as Naturally Aspirated (NA), API SN or lower.

There are two types of oil marketed to overcome the super knock phenomenon.
