/DIARY CHALLENGE/ Tonight, Tuesday, August 1, at around 10:30 in the evening, the first of two super full moons will appear over the southern horizon, which will brighten up the night sky in the second half. But it will not be the only heavenly spectacle. August is also one of the months when the Perseid meteor shower can best be observed in the summer sky. In the attached photo gallery you will find previous super full moons captured by photographer Deník Lukáš Kabona, including current images from Monday evening (on the eve of the full moon).

The first super full moon of August, which will approach the Earth to less than 360 thousand kilometers, will reach a slightly larger angular diameter in the Earth’s sky than usual. But without binoculars, the human eye may not perceive the larger diameter of the approaching full moon.

Marking of super full moons but it is not an astronomical term. It was first used in 1979 by astrologer Richard Nolle. We will never know why he chose the limit of 360,000 kilometers, perhaps because for 90 percent of its orbit, the Moon is farther from the Earth than those 360,000 kilometers.

On August 2, 2023 at 8 a.m. (half a day after the full moon), the Moon will be 357,307 kilometers from Earth, and on August 30, 2023 at 6 p.m. (half a day before the full moon), it will be even closer, at 357,185 kilometers. For comparison, when the Moon is away from Earth, it is almost 50,000 kilometers further (more than 406,000 kilometers),” stated experts from the Astronomical Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic.

Given that this will be the second such full moon in one calendar month, this phenomenon also receives the addition of “blue”. But it has nothing to do with color. The saying ‘once in a blue moon’ has been used since 1946 after a misinterpretation by amateur astronomer James Hugh Pruett to refer to the second full moon in one calendar month.

Perseids, an increased number of meteors, then people will be able to record any night from August 10 to 15, the phenomenon will culminate on the morning of August 13.
