The halftime show of this year’s Super Bowl between the Los Angeles Rams and the Cincinnati Bengals caused quite a stir. Rapper Eminem surprised with a controversial action.
The Super Bowl halftime show is infamous. Every year, superstars perform their hit songs here. While in the past The Weekend, Justin Timberlake, Shakira and Jennifer Lopez, among others, heated up the audience, this year five rap stars were booked.
dr Dre, Eminem, Snoop Dogg, Kendrick Lamar and Mary J. Blige performed together on the Super Bowl stage – and sang their greatest hits. Moments of surprise included.
Super Bowl: Rapper Eminem sets an example with kneeling
Because suddenly the rapper 50 Cent was on stage alongside the other top stars. A huge spectacle with a special highlight: rapper Eminem caused a stir with a controversial gesture. Surrounded by dancers and the other rap stars, he got on his knees – in the USA a gesture of protest against police violence and racism.
The rapper is said to have pulled through the gesture despite a lot of headwind, US media reports. The organizers were not very enthusiastic about Eminem’s action. But the rapper didn’t let that stop him – and got on his knees in front of millions of television viewers.
In the past, the symbolic kneeling was not without consequences. Starting with NFL player Colin Kaepernick, who went on his knees to protest during the national anthem, more and more athletes took part in the action. Eventually, the kneeling became a symbol of Black Lives Matter and gained worldwide fame.
Halftime show: Twitter users are enthusiastic
Even without the spectacular kneeling of the US rappers caused enthusiasm for the halftime show on social media. The fans floated in nostalgic memories when the rap legends performed. Eminem’s kneeling was hotly debated on Twitter and received a lot of encouragement.
“Did you really think someone whose career consists of pissing people off would take a knee for saying so?” one asked Twitter user obviously addressed to the NFL. “The gesture from Eminem was big,” commented another appreciatively. “Great halftime show and a shout out to Eminem for getting on his knees even though the NFL told him not to,” someone said.
So the rap star can still rebel. He proved that on the halftime show. The fans are enthusiastic – from the rapper himself and from his clear stance against racism. (ls)
