Super Blue Moon: Stunning Images of the Rare Phenomenon

On the night of this Wednesday (30/8), the Moon is at a distance from Earth smaller than usual. Because of this, the satellite appears larger to the naked eye and, thus, the phenomenon nicknamed Supermoon happens, which occurs for the second and last time in the year.

The phenomenon is nicknamed Super Blue Moon for being the second full moon of the month. The term Supermoon was created by the American astrologer Richard Nolle, in 1979, who described as ‘super’ the full moons that occur with the perigee or up to 90% close to that point. A Supermoon can occur anywhere from one to six times a year.

The Estado de Minas team recorded images of the Blue Supermoon in Belo Horizonte shortly after sunset, with the satellite close to the horizon. According to the National Observatory, the time is ideal for good photos, which can also be taken at sunrise, with the satellite appearing even larger and possibly showing variations in tonality, due to particles suspended in the atmosphere.
