Super Blue Moon Schedule and Phenomenon in Surabaya, Indonesia in August 2023

Surabaya

The Super Blue Moon phenomenon will occur on August 30-31 2023. Here is the schedule for seeing it in Indonesia.

Before discussing the Super Blue Moon, there’s nothing wrong with reviewing the Supermoon. Like the cause.

quoted Detik news from the Space site, Supermoon is a full moon phenomenon that occurs when the moon is closer to the earth. Therefore, when a Supermoon occurs, the moon will appear larger and brighter than usual.

A supermoon or super full moon can cause 30 percent of the moon’s brightness and a 14 percent increase in the moon’s disk as seen from Earth. But this difference is usually invisible to the naked eye, unless one is paying close attention to the presence of the moon each night.

Supermoon occurs because the moon’s orbit around the earth does not form a perfect circle, as a result of the influence of the earth’s gravity. The moon’s orbit around the earth is elliptical, looking like an elongated circle or oval.

That means there are times in the moon’s 27-day orbit that it is closer to Earth and farther at other times. A supermoon occurs when the moon is in the full moon phase of its 29.5-day lunar cycle, and is at Perigee, the closest point to Earth in its orbit.

On the Almanac page, it is stated that in August 2023 there will be two Supermoons. The first supermoon is the Full Sturgeon Moon, which peaks on Tuesday, 1 August 2023. Then the second Supermoon, a Blue Moon will appear, on Thursday, 30-31 August 2023.

The Super Blue Moon will actually appear from Wednesday, 30 August 2023. However, it can only be observed in Indonesia on Thursday, 31 August 2023.

According to BRIN, the way to see the Supermoon is enough to direct your eyes towards the moon. The Supermoon phenomenon can be observed with the naked eye without the aid of any optical devices. Unless you want to capture it in the form of photos or videos.

Quoting the Almanac page, the term Blue Moon or Blue Moon is most often used when there are two Supermoon phenomena in one month, such as in August 2023. This 2023 Supermoon is very special because these four events occur sequentially.
