The Sun’s Aging Process and Its Impact on Earth
Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The Sun, the radiant heart of our Solar System, has reached a significant milestone in its lifecycle. Scientists estimate that the Sun is currently around 5 billion years old, placing it in its middle age. However, this aging process is set to accelerate, with significant consequences for Earth and other celestial bodies.
As the Sun continues to age, it is expected to heat up more rapidly over the next 5 billion years. This change will have profound effects on the planets orbiting it, particularly earth, which relies on the Sun for its climate and ecosystems.
One of the most immediate impacts will be on Earth’s carbon cycle. As the Sun’s heat intensifies, the carbon cycle will slow down, making it tough for many plants to survive. This, in turn, will disrupt the food chain, leading to a cascade of ecological disasters. Scientists predict that this catastrophic event could occur as early as 600 million years from now.
Even microbes, known for their adaptability, will struggle to survive as the Sun’s temperature rises by an estimated 10% over the next billion years. This increase in temperature will exacerbate the greenhouse effect, causing oceans to evaporate and leading to widespread droughts.
Ultimately, Earth will transform into a planet similar to Venus, where temperatures are so extreme that all objects on its surface melt. At this point, human survival on Earth will become impossible.
“Earth and Mars will likely rotate into the sun, while the other planets will be pushed outward,” stated an IFL Science report, quoted on Thursday (12/10/2024).
As the Sun continues to age, it will eventually melt all its core layers, giving rise to a new stellar object known as a ‘White Dwarf’. This transformation will leave the White Dwarf with little mass, rendering it incapable of supporting the remaining planets.
Scientists predict that Jupiter, the largest planet in our Solar System, will be the last remaining giant planet. Simulations suggest that this phenomenon will occur in approximately 30 billion years, with three planets disappearing within the next 10 billion years.
Jupiter, known for its resilience, will likely endure for a long time. However,it too will eventually be pushed out of the Solar System and merge with another star. According to simulations, this event will occur in about 100 billion years, a duration far exceeding the current estimated age of the universe, which is around 13.8 billion years.
The Sun’s aging process serves as a stark reminder of the finite nature of our Solar System and the need for humanity to continue exploring and understanding the cosmos.
