Park City (dpa) – The Sundance Film Festival has opened in the snowy winter sports resort of Park City (Utah). It is the 40th edition of the festival for independent productions founded by Hollywood star Robert Redford. Over 80 feature films from 24 countries are on the program until January 28th.
In addition to filmmakers from all over the world, many Hollywood stars are also expected. Kristen Stewart, Pedro Pascal, Jesse Eisenberg and US director Steven Soderbergh want to present their independent projects at the Sundance Festival. Soderbergh is showing his thriller “Presence”, Stewart can be seen together with Steven Yeun in the futuristic romantic film “Love Me”, Eisenberg is presenting his directorial project “A Real Pain”.
German productions included
German productions also take part in the festival. Among the ten candidates in the “World Cinema Documentary Competition” category is the documentary “Eternal you – From the End of Finitude”. The film by the directing duo Hans Block and Moritz Riesewieck (“The Cleaners”) celebrates its world premiere there. The documentary looks at start-ups that use artificial intelligence to create digital avatars to enable mourners to communicate with the deceased.
The new feature film by director Nora Fingscheidt (“System Sprenger”), who brought actress Saoirse Ronan in front of the camera for the book adaptation “The Outrun,” also has its world premiere at the festival. The drama follows an alcoholic woman in London who returns to her Scottish home island of Orkney.
For many smaller films, the Sundance festival is a springboard to find distributors and a wider audience. In 2021, for example, the deaf drama “Coda” won top prizes from the jury and viewers, and “Coda” was later celebrated as “Best Film” at the Oscars.
