Sunbathing pier walrus in Langesund – VG

BREWING JOY: This handsome man lay naked on the pier at Quality Hotel Skjærgården in Langesund.

– We heard some kids howling, says Sandra Fuglset at Quality Hotel Skjærgården in Langesund.

She is the activity manager for children and young people at the hotel.

On Sunday, she did not have to invent any activities: They came by themselves, through a large walrus that suddenly lay on the pier below the hotel and basked in the sun.

– We ran down when the kids screamed – and there it was. At first we were a little uneasy because of the children, but they thought this was great fun, so there was no need to worry, says Sandra.

She says today’s attraction was discovered around 10.30.

– It is still there, she says when VG is on the thread an hour later.

Found advice online

She says they have been in doubt about what to do.

– It just lies there and does nothing. It’s not threatening and really it’s just stasis. But we have researched a bit, she says:

RELAXED: The walrus lay mostly just lazing around.

– We searched online for what to do in such situations. It said that one should not go too close, because then it can think that it is threatened. So we keep a good distance and enjoy seeing such a large animal with our own eyes. It is not so often one gets to experience.

Camilla Lundby and her daughter Nora (6) took a bath on Langesund when the walrus came swimming under the pier. They just managed to get ashore, and saw that it got up on the pier.

– I was standing on the bathing ladder when I suddenly heard splashing sounds behind me. It was very fun, says Camilla to VG.

– We do not usually do walrus

Veterinarian Rolf Tore Meen at the veterinary watch in Grenland says that the advice they found is good. He says he is a bit in deep water, unlike the walrus:

– We do not usually do walrus, so I do not know exactly what to say, he begins.

– But it is probably best to just leave it alone and not bother it. Unless it’s sick. If something is to be done, it is probably the wildlife committee that must handle it.

– Do not be silly

In the Bamble Wildlife Committee, they take the walrus news with great calm.

– I guess it may be the walrus that has been seen on Jomfruland and elsewhere in recent weeks.

He says the advice to keep your distance is important.

– You should not toy with a large mammal. It will probably disappear by itself, says Torstein Dahl, leader of Bamble game and inland fishing committee.
