Sunak is said to draw his inspiration from New Zealand, where a law was introduced last year aimed at preventing people born from 2009 onwards from obtaining cigarettes. This would make the United Kingdom one of the countries that tackle smokers the hardest.
The opposition Labor party had also previously suggested that a gradual abolition of cigarette sales could be a good idea. Although Labour’s shadow health secretary, Wes Streeting, said he first wanted to find out whether there was “sufficient appetite for change” among the population for such a measure.
Political observers suspect that Sunak is in the process of announcing a number of plans that he expects will give him gains in the elections late next year. Earlier this week, the Prime Minister also announced that he would scale back part of the British climate plans to spare consumers. Sunak’s Conservative Party is in very bad shape according to the polls.
