MADRID, December 16 (PRESS EUROPE) –
UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak ruled out any imminent changes to talks on the Northern Ireland protocol included in the Brexit deals on Friday.
Although he said he was working “relentlessly” to try to resolve the situation, he warned that talks were unlikely to materialize anytime soon. During a visit to Belfast, the capital of Northern Ireland, Sunak said he was “committed to the idea of solving the problems generated by the Northern Ireland protocol”.
“My aim is to protect Northern Ireland’s place within the UK and, by doing so, restore the Executive,” he said in relation to the failed election of the Speaker of the Northern Ireland Assembly due to the blockade of the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP), which continues to refuse to give the green light and return to the Executive until the Northern Ireland protocol dispute is resolved.
According to Sunak, this is “what the people of Northern Ireland need and what their government is working towards”. “I have not set a deadline for the talks (between the government and the European Union) and I don’t want to raise people’s expectations of an imminent resolution,” she stressed, according to information from ‘The Guardian’ newspaper.
In this sense, he indicated that the talks were continuing and guaranteed that he was “working as hard as possible to find a solution as soon as possible”. “I want to do it as soon as possible,” she decided.
His comments come after he met with leaders of Stormont’s five main political forces, the Northern Ireland National Assembly, during his first visit to the area as UK prime minister.
