Sun Express launches Bulgaria routes with Electra Airways

From next year, Sun Express will be offering flights from seven German airports to Burgas and Varna through a cooperation with the Bulgarian carrier Electra Airways. The cooperation, which follows similar agreements with other airlines, is initially agreed until 2027.

From May 2025, Sun Express plans to operate 32 flights a week between the airports Cologne, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Hanover, Leipzig, Munich and Stuttgart with the Bulgarian cities of Burgas and Varna. The offer will initially be bookable by tour operator and travel agency partners, seat-only and direct bookings via the Sun Express website will follow, Sun Express announced.

The focus of the cooperation will be on the summer months of 2025, 2026 and 2027, it continues. The partnership will see Sun Express take over the commercial tasks from flight planning and scheduling to sales and marketing and revenue management, while Electra Airways will concentrate on operational aspects such as ground handling, flight operations and first-class onboard service.

Model Air Cairo

Sun Express established the model after Sun Express Germany ceased operations. Instead of having its own airline within the EU, sales cooperations were now used to connect airports in the EU with destinations other than Turkey. The model for the current deal was the existing partnership with Air Cairo, explains Sun Express. It was announced in March at the ITB.

In 2025, two Airbus A320s from Electra Airways will initially be deployed, one of which will be stationed in Burgas and one in Varna. Depending on how demand develops, a doubling to four aircraft in 2026 is conceivable, and possibly an increase to a total of seven aircraft by 2027.
