Summit County Sheriff’s Deputy Fatally Shoots Man in Summit Cove Area

Summit County, Colorado – In a tragic incident on Sunday morning, a Summit County sheriff’s deputy shot and killed a man in the Summit Cove area near Keystone. The Colorado Bureau of Investigation is now assisting Summit County in investigating the shooting.

The sheriff’s office first reported the shooting on its Facebook page at around 8:45 a.m., assuring the community that there was no ongoing threat. However, further details have not been released by the sheriff’s office as of 11 a.m. The fatality was confirmed by the Colorado Bureau of Investigation.

The person who was killed has been identified as 18-year-old Charlie Foster, according to the Summit Daily newspaper. Foster’s aunt, Monica Vasquez, revealed that her nephew was experiencing a mental health crisis. Emergency dispatch audio also recorded a Summit County dispatcher referencing a mental health crisis.

The shooting was alerted by the sheriff’s office after an emergency alert was sent to nearby residents, instructing them to shelter in place due to a “police emergency.” The alert urged residents to take immediate shelter indoors, close all windows and doors, and turn off heating and air conditioning systems.

The initial call came in around 7:25 a.m. in the 800 block of Summit Drive, according to emergency radio dispatch audio. Deputies and a dispatcher mentioned a person who was possibly armed with a gun. The call appeared to be related to a missing juvenile experiencing a mental health crisis.

At least one Summit County sheriff’s deputy and one Dillon police officer arrived at the scene, with an officer reporting that they had the person at gunpoint. Around 7:40 a.m., a request was made over the radio to issue a shelter-in-place order, and gunshots were heard shortly after.

It remains unclear which officer or deputy fired their weapon or if Foster had a weapon or fired it. Foster’s aunt mentioned that he had a BB gun, while officers on the radio dispatch audio only made reference to a weapon or gun.

The presence of body cameras on the responding officers has not been confirmed. CBS News Colorado has filed a public records request for footage of the shooting.
