Playing truant three times a week until treating everyone to the costs of the business: of course we all want to go through life as honestly as possible. But summer sometimes brings out unexpected sides in us.
Sabine (42), mother of Merijn (8), Guusje (5) and Otis (3):
“As a manager of a department, 60-hour working weeks are no exception for me. I love that, I love my job and my children think it’s a party at the after-school care. So win-win!
Tricky tropenrooster
I do regret the devastating impact of my job on my social life. For the past two years I have found a way that works well for me to keep everything in balance: in the summer I use my own variant of the tropical schedule: three times a week, while my children are at daycare or grandparents, stop I start work at 3.30 pm and open a bottle of wine.
“Three times a week I stop working at 3.30 pm”
I pop in the garden with a friend or organize a zoom drink with a friend I haven’t seen in a while. Those two hours are all mine. I drink, laugh, chat and (often) enjoy the sun. When the kids come home I’m in a great mood, so everyone benefits from this.
The only downside is that later that evening I often have to do some overdue work. And to be fair, this trick is not without risks: I fell asleep on my laptop once because of all those wines – and worse: I once emailed a confidential file to my entire team.”

Not chic, but nice
Jayda (29), mother of Evy (5):
“In the summer I throw a lot of parties at the expense of my boss. For example, I write a terrace date with one or two girlfriends as a work meeting. In itself it is partly true because yes, did I ever meet one of those friends through my work?
“I know it’s not fancy, but I work hard enough for it”
Sometimes this happens a few times a week. It even gives me a kick. Then I hear myself shout with great bravado: ‘Ladies and gentlemen, this plate of snacks is offered to you by the company…’ and then the name of my boss. I know it’s not fancy, but I work hard enough for it. Plus my boss is quite the jerk who never gives me any credits. In the summer I settle all my accounts this way.”
