Two young visiting college sisters from Maryland died yesterday in a fire at the house their family had rented for vacation in Noyac, Long Island (NY).
Jillian, 21, and Lindsay Wiener, 19, were sleeping when the Noyack Bay house fire started around 3:30 a.m. Wednesday, according to NBC News.
Her father, Lewis Wiener, 60, was woken up by breaking glass and tried to get his wife and three children out of the house. But the sisters were trapped in their room upstairs.
The father reportedly attempted to re-enter the house to save the daughters, but was unable to penetrate the flames. Upon arrival, officers outside found three people – the girls’ father, mother and brother – who escaped the fire with minor injuries.
Firefighters located the two sisters inside the house. An ambulance took them to SUNY Southampton Hospital, but it was too late to save their lives.
Volunteer fire departments from North Sea, Southampton, East Hampton, Bridgehampton and Sag Harbor responded to extinguish the blaze. Fox News. The fire did not appear to be suspicious, but the cause was under investigation yesterday.
“My heart is heavy upon hearing this news,” Goli Azhdam, a friend and neighbor of the family in Potomac, Maryland, told the station.
Jillian was an incoming senior at the University of Michigan, and Lindsay was ready to return to Tulane University for her sophomore year.
