Summer tour: Stark-Watzinger discusses future technologies and energies

Research into future technologies and energies is of utmost importance for Germany. This is why Federal Minister Bettina Stark-Watzinger is visiting various research institutions and companies from August 12 to 16 to discuss artificial intelligence, quantum, cyber defense, hydrogen and fusion energy.

These include:

  • the Fraunhofer IEG in Cottbus, which has developed a model of a hydrogen power plant
  • the Lausitz Science Park Cottbus, which shows how the coal region is becoming a sustainable location
  • the Helmholtz Centre in Dresden-Rossendorf, which is researching new radiopharmaceutical methods for cancer therapy
  • the Cyber Agency in Halle (Saale), which promotes research for internal and external security
  • the National Research Center for Applied Cybersecurity ATHENE in Darmstadt, which researches disinformation, deepfakes and IT security
  • Aleph Alpha in Heilbronn, which is developing a large language model, the basis for chatbots with generative artificial intelligence
  • the quantum data center of IQM Germany in Munich, which develops quantum computers

The first stop on the summer tour is the Fraunhofer Institute for Energy Infrastructures and Geothermal Energy (IEG). Research is being carried out here on climate-neutral municipal heat supply, hydrogen power plants and geothermal energy. There, the Federal Minister exchanged views on future energies. The second stop was the Lausitz Science Park Cottbus. Here, work is being done on innovations that will enable structural change in the coal region. These include, for example, next generation drugs for new active ingredients against thrombosis or strokes as well as new processes for hydrogen production.
