The Summer Streets program returns, or Calles de Veranos, an opportunity for families to enjoy outdoor activities in public spaces.
This first Saturday one of the events took place in Long Island City, Queens.
Activities will take place over five consecutive weekends, and this year, for the first time, will include all five boroughs.
New Yorkers can enjoy several miles of car-free streets to walk, bike, run or just spend time outside without worrying about traffic.
“Hard going up, but there are little parts that one is afraid of but then it passes,” says Luis Morocho, a Long Island resident.
“I’ve been with DLT for 12 years since 2015 so it’s always a pleasure to bring music to the community, to different communities in New York,” continues Pol “Sabor” Rivera.
“I come every year to use my bicycle. It seems to me like a very safe environment or space to be able to enjoy with the family,” says Yessenia Cerra.
The program has doubled in size since its launch 15 years ago, on 20 miles of car-free streets.
The goal is to provide equal access to open public spaces to all New Yorkers.
