Summer is one hour closer to night

The case is being updated.

Though, there may not be many who actually set the clock anymore, as most technical gadgets fix this automatically.

And you do not have to get up at two o’clock at night either, even if that is when the clock should be formally set one hour closer to summer. But it must be asked.

– Now I do what I can to get us a little closer to hugging, family visits, outdoor beer, parties and concerts, and a little further away from this difficult year we have left behind. Now we are one hour closer to summer and better times, and it does not happen a minute too early, says Minister of Trade and Industry Iselin Nybø (V).

As responsible for the Judiciary, she is also a kind of unofficial “Minister of Time”.

Energy saving

The historical reason for the summer time scheme was actually energy saving. Some countries introduced summer time during the First World War to save coal to be used in the war. It is said that George Hudson was the first to propose summer time. He was a researcher and wanted more sun in the evening to collect insects.

In modern times, there is probably not much to gain from saving energy on this clock exercise, which Norway first introduced in 1916 and has now had since 1980.

But the theme of winter and summer has also become a political nut.

In 2018, the European Commission presented a proposal to abolish the scheme of setting the clock back and forth. But not much has happened since. Time has almost stood still, so to speak. The Council of Europe has not adopted the proposal presented by the European Commission, and which the European Parliament supported in 2019. When it is adopted and whether it will be, is therefore completely in the blue.

Towards the summer

– There are many who think a lot about setting the clock. Should the proposal be adopted in the EU, it will be up to each EU country to decide whether they want to use summer time or winter time as their normal time. Norway must also take a position on what we want to do, in that case, says the Minister of Trade and Industry.

And the rule of thumb is still that you should set the clock for the summer. So now in March we present it, while in the autumn we set it back to the summer we have done. Maybe because we long to return?
