WIESBADEN – You have probably already asked yourself: What do the President of the State Parliament and his Vice-Presidents actually do in the summer? During this summer break, the press office of the Hessian state parliament will present the holiday plans of the state parliament president and the five vice-presidents one after the other. The interview with Boris Rhein is the first in the series.

Are you going away or are you staying in Hessen?
Rhein: We stay at home for one part of the vacation and travel the other part of the vacation.

Do you generally prefer to vacation by the sea or in the mountains?
Rhein: I’m completely undecided: I love the mountains, their views and their fauna and flora. But I also love the maritime south with its scents and culinary delights.

Which means of transport do you prefer to travel with?
Rhein: I admit that I have a soft spot for cars. I also consider cars to be the most practical means of transport to travel with children.

How do you like to live on vacation (tent, hotel, holiday apartment …)?
Rhein: No matter where, the main thing is that I have my family with me.

What do you read on vacation?
Rhein: I read very, very much, and am enthusiastic about crime fiction and novels. My top authors are Juli Zeh and Thea Dorn. Most recently I devoured “About People” by Juli Zeh and “The Secret of Room 622” by Joël Dicker. During my vacation I will read “The Candidate” by Constantin Schreiber and “The Self-Righteous” by Sahra Wagenknecht.

Are you writing a travel diary?
Rhein: No.

What does a perfect holiday breakfast look like for you?
Rhein: Every nutritionist will break out in a sweat: dark Assam tea, jam, Nutella, honey, croissants, butter, baguette (white, not whole grain) and not to forget: a three-minute egg.

Walking shoes or flip-flops?
Rhein: On vacation I always have both with me: hiking boots and flip-flops. But one thing has to be included in any case: my racing bike.

Do you prefer to go out to eat on vacation or do you cook yourself?
Rhein: We really enjoy buying the products of our holiday region at the local markets and then cooking them ourselves. Every now and then we like to go to a restaurant.

Do you feel sad when you have to pack your bags because your vacation is over?
Rhein: I’m a Frankfurter boy and as such, the sadness about the end of the vacation disappears quickly as soon as I spot the Ginnheimer asparagus, i.e. the television tower, on the autobahn.
