Summer heat: the peak is officially behind us

Published on August 10, 2024 at 11:10 p.m.

Quebec has reportedly passed the famous point of no return: the long decline in temperatures has begun. Details.

In short:

  • A particularly hot summer;

  • A new step towards autumn;

  • A week that will do you good.

There is no doubt that this is an exceptionally hot summer for Quebec. As of August 10, the city of a hundred bell towers has had 16 days of 30°C, 4 more than normal for a full season. Saguenay has also been particularly spoiled when it comes to heat: the mercury has reached 30°C on 14 occasions, almost double the average.

Now, the province has entered a new stage towards autumn: the decline in temperatures has officially begun.

The climax is behind us

Statistically, the highest temperatures are recorded during the last week of July and the first week of August. Afterwards, Quebec begins a long and gradual descent in mercury.

High temperatures therefore become progressively rarer from mid-August onwards. As a guide, on average, maximums reach the 30°C mark a dozen times during a full summer season, but only twice from 10 August onwards.

HEAT2

However, we should not think that summer is over: maximum temperatures generally exceed 20°C until mid-September for Quebec City and one more week for the metropolitan area. Heat waves are still possible.

Good to know: Just last year, a heatwave occurred in Montreal at the beginning of September. The mercury reached 30 °C between September 5 and 7, 2023.

A candid week

However, let us point out that the coming days are promising, particularly for the southern regions of the province: starting Tuesday, the expected maximums will be within seasonal norms or slightly above. Remember that the average at this time of year is around 26 °C for southern Quebec.
