The summer of 2024 was the hottest on record for Greece, according to the preliminary meteorological data analyzed by the scientific team of the National Observatory of Athens/meteo.gr. At the same time, the data source for the report was drawn from Copernicus.
The summer of 2024 in Greece was characterized by long periods with high temperature values for many days, far exceeding the normal temperatures for the season throughout the country. June and July 2024 were recorded as the warmest on record for Greece, while August was the second warmest behind August 2021.
The temperatures
The summer of 2024 is recorded as the warmest on record for Greece, surpassing by +2.9°C the average value of the period 1991-2020 and by +1°C the previously warmest summer of 2012.
Regarding the trend of the average temperature in Greece from 1960 to 2024 for the summer season, this shows an increase of +2.3°C.
In areas of western and northern Greece the average temperature for the summer of 2024 fluctuated by 2-3°C (up to +4°C in some areas) above the average value of the period 1991-2020, in the rest of the country by 1- 2°C, while in no part of Greece did the deviation of the average temperature fall below +1.4 °C. The lowest positive deviations were noted in the Aegean region due to the effect of the melt.

The lowest positive deviations occurred in its region Aegean due to the effect of maltemia.
