In summer there are cancellations and delays in long-distance rail traffic in NRW. The cause is construction work in Bavaria. The effects at a glance.

Würzburg/Nuremberg – There is still a lot to do at Deutsche Bahn (DB) in 2023. Sections of the route have to be closed again and again for expansion, maintenance and modernization. Often with far-reaching consequences: In the course of a construction site in Bavaria in the summer of 2023, ICE trains to and from NRW will also be severely restricted.

The Nuremberg-Würzburg railway line will be maintained from May – causing detours and cancellations

Due to overhead line work, the section between Rottendorf (Würzburg) and Fürth (Nuremberg) from May 27 to September 11, 2023 fully locked. No train will be able to run there for more than three months. According to Deutsche Bahn, there are therefore diversions, travel time extensions and some train cancellations – also in NRW. Especially from June to August, NRW train travelers have to cope with massive restrictions, because then the railway line between Rheine and Osnabrück is also closed.

Cancellations and diversions due to railway construction in Bavaria – timetable changes at a glance

  • ICE-Sprinter München–Frankfurt–Düsseldorf: All connections fail
  • ICE line Hamburg-Bremen-Cologne-Frankfurt-Nuremberg/Passau: There is a travel time extension of around 30 minutes. The trains between Würzburg and Nuremberg via Ansbach will be diverted without stopping. The stops in Hanau and Frankfurt Hbf are omitted. Alternatively, the trains stop in Frankfurt South.
  • ICE line Dortmund-Frankfurt-Würzburg-Munich: There is a travel time extension of around 35 minutes. The hourly trains will be diverted via Ansbach without stopping between Würzburg and Nuremberg. Some of the ICE trains also stop in Ingolstadt.
  • ICE line Dortmund-Koblenz-Frankfurt-Nuremberg-Vienna: The “majority” of the trains running every two hours will be diverted between Würzburg and Nuremberg without extending the travel time. However, the stops in Frankfurt Hbf and Hanau are omitted. Alternatively, the trains stop in Frankfurt South. Individual trains are also canceled between Frankfurt and Nuremberg. They will then run on the Dortmund–Frankfurt section with new train numbers and on the Nuremberg–Vienna section with their regular train numbers.
  • ICE line Bremen/Hamburg-Hanover-Göttingen-Munich: There is a travel time extension of around 25 minutes. The trains now only run every two hours instead of every hour and travel via Würzburg and Kassel to Hanover and Hamburg. You will be diverted between Würzburg and Munich via Augsburg (with a stop). The Nuremberg and Ingolstadt stops are no longer available. Notice to travelers: Due to another construction site on the Kassel–Fulda section, the journey takes another 60 minutes longer. In the other hours, trains on the Hamburg-Munich ICE line run via Nuremberg-Erfurt to Göttingen-Hanover-Hamburg and are therefore not affected by the construction site.

Railway construction site Nuremberg-Würzburg: How is regional traffic affected?

It is not yet known what consequences the railway construction work between Nuremberg and Würzburg will have for regional traffic. The responsible DB Regio Bayern has no information on this yet. In addition to the ICE trains, the affected sections of the route also run RE 10. In the summer of 2023, this could possibly lead to detours or diversions.
