From ice cream to spritz, from planes to gardening, passing through hotels, restaurants and beach establishments: this summer everything will cost more, with a peak that will reach almost 50% for air flights. To reckon with the ‘dear summer’ is a study carried out by Codacons who elaborated the picture of the price increases of a season that risks becoming really hot using Istat data. The photograph taken of goods and services typical of the holiday period shows, for example, the increase ranging from 15.5% for a beer to 26.8% for a holiday package, passing through 10-15% for services on the beach.
“Unfortunately, our study certifies an upward trend for all goods linked to the summer, and even if inflation were to drop in the coming weeks, the prices of goods and services linked to the summer period will rise between June and August due to the greater demand and seasonal factors”, says the president Carlo Rienzi.
The Codacons study starts from food, a sector in which the most consumed products during the summer undergo double-digit price increases: this is the case of ice creams which, compared to last year, cost as much as 22% more. Fresh fish increases on average by +5.9% but if frozen fish products are used, the increase rises to +16.6%. Fresh fruit and vegetables both rose by +7.6%, while spending on french fries increased by +16.1% on an annual basis. It will cost much more to indulge in a spritz or drink a beer: the Codacons study estimates that alcoholic aperitifs go up by +11.5%, alcoholic beverages by +8.6%, beer by +15.5%. And it’s worse for those who opt for soft drinks, whose prices rise by +17.1%, reaching a peak of +18.4% for fruit juices; +15% mineral waters.
The expensive-summer list drawn up by the consumers’ association continues with transport: today buying a flight to a foreign location costs an average of 46.6% compared to last year, while train tickets increase by 6%. Bicycles rose by +4.8%, while 15.6% more was spent on motor caravans, caravans and trailers. Price increases also for the nautical sector: boats, outboard engines and equipment for boats mark a +12.6%. The approaching summer period then makes the prices of holiday packages soar, which rise by +26.8%, but the trend is also upwards for accommodation: hotels have adjusted their rates by +15.5%, holiday villages and campsites by +7.4%, while dining in restaurants costs 5.9% more.
The Codacons then launches the alarm on the increases that will be recorded on the beach: the high energy price that characterized the last year, together with skyrocketing inflation – he says – will also cause the tariffs charged by the bathing establishments to rent sunbeds, umbrellas and deck chairs, and for drinks at the beaches (soft drinks, ice cream, water, etc.) with average increases that the association estimates between +10% and +15% compared to 2022. Also read a magazine below a beach umbrella or spreading sunscreen will be more expensive: in fact, weekly and magazine magazines cost 9% more than in 2022, while beauty products for the body will increase by 7.9%. Nasty surprises also for gardening enthusiasts: garden furniture increased by +4.6%, tools and equipment for greenery by +3.9%, plants and flowers by +6.1% – analyzes the association . On the other hand, 6.9% more is spent today to install an air conditioner in the home. “This means that Italians, to take a vacation, spend a day at the beach and consume ice cream or drinks – comments the president of Codacons Carlo Rienzi – will have to put their wallets and face a significantly higher expense than in recent years” .
