Summary of the most outstanding games from Opening Night Live

As is tradition, the Opening Night Live was the event that kicked off the Gamescom 2024 video game fair in Cologne (Germany). The presentation organised by journalist and producer Geoff Keighley served to introduce some of the games that will be released over the next few months.

While there were no big news, the event did serve to reveal new titles such as Borderlands 4, Reanimal, Monument Valley 3 and Masters of Albion. Another notable announcement was the release date of Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, which will be released on PC and Xbox on December 9 and –surprise– will also be coming to PlayStation 5 next spring.

Below we round up the top announcements and trailers, a selection that includes games for PC, PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and mobile devices.

Borderlands 4

The first game of the event is always reserved for a major announcement, and this time the game chosen has been Bordelands 4, the new installment of the popular first-person action game developed by the American studio Gearbox. With the film adaptation just released, the title has been presented with a teaser and has not been shown in playable form. It is expected to go on sale sometime in 2025.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 6

As expected, Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 has been revealed with a new trailer for its story mode. The single-player campaign is being developed by American team Raven Software in collaboration with Treyarch. The video doesn’t show many new features from a gameplay perspective, but it does show a spectacular and highly effective presentation, very much in line with the Black Ops sub-saga.

Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero

The new game based on Akira Toriyama’s manga has been shown in countless trailers for months and this Opening Night Live could not be an exception. During the event, a new video of this title was shown, which is considered a spiritual successor to the legendary Budokai Tenkaichi saga, and which will go on sale next October for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series.

Dune Awakening

Dune Awakening, the multiplayer role-playing game based on the fictional universe created by writer Frank Hebert, will enter early access on PC in early 2025. The game will later also be coming to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series. On the occasion of Gamescom, Norwegian studio Funcom has published an extensive video about the game.

Lost Records: Bloom & Rage

Don’t Nod, the French studio behind narrative games like Life is Strange and Tell Me Why, has released a new trailer for Lost Records: Bloom & Rage. The premise is this: four friends who experienced a strange event in 1995 meet again 27 years later. They swore never to speak of what happened in 1995, but now they have to face it.

Monster Hunter Wilds

The new installment of Capcom’s hunting game was one of the big highlights of the Summer Game Fest held last June and it has been again at this Opening Night Live. The title will be released in 2025 for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series. Each new gameplay is quite a spectacle and shows that the Japanese company has something very powerful in its hands.

Reanimal

Swedish developer Tarsier Studios, responsible for the haunting Little Nightmares, have unveiled their new project. Reanimal is a cooperative adventure that will maintain the dark aesthetic of its previous title. The protagonists will be two orphaned brothers who will try to rescue three friends. The game is in development for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series.

Monument Valley 3

The acclaimed mobile game from British studio UsTwo Games is getting a third installment and will be released exclusively on Netflix. Monument Valley is an original title in which the different levels are solved using perspective. In addition to being a game suitable for all audiences, its excellent visual and sound design have made it one of the most highly rated titles for mobile devices. This third installment will be available on December 10. In addition, the first two installments will join the Netflix games catalogue in September and October.

Civilization VII

Publisher Take Two has announced that Civilization VII will be released on February 11, 2025, and has shown the first gameplay video. The new installment of this veteran strategy game series will not only be released on PC, but will also have versions for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series.

Batman: Arkham Shadow

This new game based on the DC superhero is exclusive to the Meta Quest 3 virtual reality device. It has been announced that it will go on sale in October 2024, a year after the initially planned date. The title will offer an immersive adventure that will incorporate many of the mechanics of the Arkham series, but adapted to virtual reality. However, the fact that it is only compatible with the Meta Quest 3 device will greatly limit its user base.

Masters of Albion

After years away from the spotlight, veteran game designer Peter Molyneux has presented Masters of Albion. The creator of such memorable titles as Populous, Black & White and Fable has presented this strategy and management game that stands out for its original idea of possessing characters. Molyneux himself has revealed his new project on stage at the event, where he revealed that it has been developed by a team of twenty people.

Indiana Jones and the Great Circle

The new game from the most famous archaeologist and adventurer in fiction already has a release date: December 9, 2024. The title developed by the Swedish studio MachineGames has been shown with a new trailer that continues to show a very well-crafted visual aspect. But the big news has not been the date, nor the new trailer, but the confirmation that the game will also be released for PlayStation 5 in spring 2025, despite belonging to an internal studio of its competitor Xbox.
