Summary of MLS matches including Whitecaps and Toronto FC

The Vancouver Whitecaps got their MLS season off to a bad start with a 4-0 loss to the Columbus Crew on Saturday.

Crew fans were quickly able to celebrate from the spot when Miguel Berry’s shot deflected past goalkeeper Thomas Hasal in the eighth minute.

Derrick Etienne junior did not miss his chance to double his lead in the 25th minute when he found himself unguarded at the start of the area.

Nothing was working for the Whitecaps and things took an even more frustrating turn for the Canadian side in the 53rd minute when Jake Nerwinski was ejected from the game after receiving a second yellow card. He tripped on that streak Yaw Yeboah in midfield.

The Crew weren’t asking for that much and substitutes Luis Diaz and Lucas Zelarayan hit the mark to complete the scoring.

Toronto FC picks up a point for Bradley

The other Canadian side in action on day one was Toronto FC and on coach Bob Bradley’s debut, the team drew a 1-1 draw at FC Dallas.

Paul Arriola spotted his teammate Jader Obrian in the ninth minute of play and the latter opened the scoring. Jonathan Osorio leveled the score before retiring to the locker room.

FC Dallas 1 – Toronto FC 1

Toronto FC thought they were awarded a penalty in the 68th minute when player Alejandro Pozuelo stumbled in the box, but the video replay overturned the decision depriving TFC of that chance.

Vela gets a hat trick

Carlos Vela had a thunderous start to the season for Los Angeles FC with a hat trick in a 3-0 win over the Colorado Rapids.

He opened the scoring following a penalty in the 29th minute. The striker took advantage of a duel won in midfield by José Cifuentes to appear behind the Rapids defense and thwart William Yarbrough with a good shot.

Vela completed his hat trick in the 50th minute after a fine individual maneuver that allowed him to place a shot into the back of the net.
